Two enquiries do not take the same route. Anything urgent goes by phone, anything that needs a figure goes by photograph. Here is how to choose, and what happens next.
What gets there fastest
A purchase that cannot wait — a removal date already fixed, an estate to clear, a flat to hand back — goes by phone. Within a few minutes we know whether the rug interests us, whether your town falls on the round and when we can come. A valuation, on the other hand, is better handled in writing: three photographs are worth a quarter of an hour of description, and they save us guessing at a knot down the telephone. The quote form explains which ones to take.
What to have to hand when you call
- The dimensions in centimetres, measured edge to edge, fringes excluded.
- A photograph of the back, however hurried: that is what tells hand-knotted from machine-made.
- Your town, which floor you are on, and whether there is a lift.
The rest — the origin, the age, whatever the family was told about it — interests us but decides nothing. A rug with no known history is valued just as well as any other: it is the back that speaks, not the story.
After you send the form
You receive a written reply within 48 working hours: what we read on the photographs, the condition we can see, what can be repaired and what can no longer be, and a figure. If a view is missing, we ask for it within that same time rather than leaving the file to sleep. After that, nothing more leaves us: we do not ring three times and we put nobody on a mailing list. If you take it further, we agree a collection slot; the call-out is free within the area we cover.
The workshop is a workshop, not a shop
There is no window display, no rugs lined up for sale, and the door is not open to passers-by: we wash, we rinse, we re-knot, and the floor is taken. You come by appointment, when there is a reason to come — to see work in progress, to decide on a restoration in front of the piece rather than from photographs. The rest of the time, we are the ones who travel. We come and fetch the rug, rolled and stood upright if it has to pass a narrow stairwell, and we bring it back laid in its place. A good-sized sitting-room rug weighs some thirty kilos and takes two people to handle: carrying it is not your job.

Nobody picks up — should I call back?
Not necessarily. A workshop is noisy and hands there are often in the water. Leave a message with your name, your town and the dimensions of the rug, or send the form with your photographs: both arrive in the same place, and a written enquiry has the advantage of losing nothing on the way.
I am dealing with my parents' house. Do I have to be the owner to ask for a valuation?
No. A good share of rug buying enquiries come from estates, from notaries or from children clearing a house. Just tell us who decides on the sale: we pay and collect only with that person's agreement, and the receipt is made out in their name.
Do I need an appointment for the collection?
Yes, a slot agreed in advance, so that somebody is there and the rug is clear of the furniture. We climb the stairs, lift or no lift. Move only what is standing on the rug and anything fragile around it: the rest is our business.
