Three photographs, and which ones
The front, the whole rug. Flat, with no furniture on it, in daylight rather than with a flash. The design must be visible from end to end, fringes included.
The back. Turn back a corner, or the whole rug if you can handle it. This is the most useful of the three photographs: the back tells you the knotting, the density, the material of the foundation and the repairs already made. On a machine-made rug, the back shows a glued cloth; on a hand-knotted rug, it shows the design, knot by knot.
A close-up of the knotting. Come in to twenty or thirty centimetres, on the back, until you can make out the knots one by one. Put a coin or a tape measure in the frame: without a scale, a photograph of knots means nothing.
Add as many as are needed of the damaged areas — a hole, a fringe that has run, a watermark, a burn — always with an object for scale.
The dimensions, to the centimetre
Measure the length and the width edge to edge, excluding fringes, and give the result in centimetres. A hand-knotted rug is never perfectly rectangular: give the largest measurement in each direction, and tell us if the difference between the two sides is more than three or four centimetres. That is restoration information, not a fault.
For a fitted carpet, the useful details are different: the area in square metres, the type of fitting — tiles, fully bonded, stretched over underlay —, the nature of the fibre if you know it, and above all the time slots you have available: evening, night, weekend.
What we send back
A written answer, not a phone call. It contains what we read from the photographs — probable origin, material, method of manufacture —, the condition observed, what can be repaired and what can no longer be, the work proposed in the order in which it has to be done, and a figure.
If it is a purchase, the answer is an offer. It takes account of the origin, the age, the fineness of the knotting, the nature of the dyes and the condition. Payment is made on the day of collection: cash up to €3,000, instant transfer or banker's draft above that, as Belgian law requires.
The turnaround is 48 working hours. If a view is missing, we ask for it within that same period rather than letting the file sit.
No obligation, in the literal sense
A quote is not an order. You can keep it, compare it, come back in six months, or never come back. We do not chase three times and we do not put anyone on a mailing list.
Sometimes the answer is: do nothing. A fringe fraying without running, a selvedge going grey, even wear across the pile — these faults do not progress as long as nothing pulls at them. We note them, we keep an eye on them, and we do not charge for work that is not urgent.
When photographs are not enough
Some things do not show in a photograph: a smell, an old dye bleed, a broken foundation under an intact pile, hardened glue on the back of a machine-made rug. In those cases we come and look, or we collect the rug and the diagnosis is made at the workshop — before any commitment, and at no cost if you decide not to go ahead.
