Fitted carpets in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert
A fitted carpet is washed in place, by machine: exactly what a hand-knotted rug cannot take.
The rug market
Four weekly markets structure the town: the Meudon market on the avenue Georges Henri on Wednesdays from 15.00 to 20.00, the marché des saveurs on the Tomberg on Thursdays from 15.00 to 20.00, the place Saint-Lambert market on Saturdays from 8.00 to 13.00, and the organic Gué market on Saturdays from 8.30 to 12.00 — the first organic market in the Brussels Region. This is the local fabric of a town where furniture and rugs are handed down more than they are hunted out.
A schedule of condition, a re-letting, a lease taken over: that is often the moment when the fitted carpet becomes urgent again.
The building stock
The Kapelleveld garden city was built from 1923 to 1926 to a plan by the town planner Louis Van der Swaelmen, with the architects Huib Hoste and Antoine Pompe — a listed modernist ensemble, with small rooms and steep stairs, where rugs are laid on original floorboards.
On a bonded fitted carpet or on tiles, the technique is not the same as on a knotted rug: here, hot water extraction is the right move.
Collection
Municipal parking is divided into blue zones (2 hours free with the parking disc), grey (4 hours 30 maximum), orange (2 hours maximum) and green (unlimited but paid), all in force from 9.00 to 18.00 Monday to Saturday according to the signs, with the first quarter of an hour free in the paid zones. Four streets are even reserved for residents only, on pain of €50 per half-day. For a collection, that means a real window of two hours in front of the door, no more.
We work at night or at the weekend so as not to interrupt business — and access for the equipment is arranged in advance.
A fitted carpet is a fixed covering: stretched over underlay, fully bonded, or laid as tiles. It cannot be rolled, immersed or spun. Washing therefore takes place on site, and the only way to get clean water into it and straight back out again is hot water extraction: the nozzle sprays the solution into the pile and takes it back up a few centimetres away, in the same movement.
On a hand-knotted oriental rug, that same movement would be a mistake. The foundation is cotton, the dyes are often vegetable, and water driven in under pressure goes down into the weft with no way of getting back out: the colours migrate, the foundation swells, and the rug buckles as it dries. A hand-knotted rug is washed by immersion in a bath, spun in a centrifuge and dried flat. A fitted carpet, never — its pile is short, its back all but watertight, and the water stays where it does its work.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How long does a fitted carpet stay damp after washing?
That depends on the technique and the ventilation, not on the area. Encapsulation uses very little water and returns a surface to use quickly; hot water extraction takes longer. We choose the technique to suit your window, and we blow air across it until the end.
Can cleaning damage a fitted carpet?
Yes, in three ways: too much water reaching the substrate and lifting it, too alkaline a pH dulling a wool fibre, too aggressive a rotary brush opening up the pile. That is why we identify the fibre and the type of fitting before bringing out a machine.
I live in a ground-floor flat over a cellar near the boulevard de la Woluwe and my rug smells musty every summer. Is that normal?
It is common in this area: the boulevard de la Woluwe, the rue Voot and the surroundings of the place Saint-Lambert are on the valley floor, and the town itself lists them among its flood-risk areas. The cellars there stay cool and heavy with damp, and wool rolled up in those conditions ferments and attracts moths. We deal with the smell by a full wash and controlled drying in the workshop, and we advise never storing a rolled rug in a cellar in that neighbourhood — storing it flat, upstairs, is enough to avoid the problem.
