We dust before wetting, wash below 30 °C between pH 5 and 7, and dry flat within 24 hours.

Damp and water

The town itself identifies as flood-risk areas, on the floor of the Woluwe valley: the boulevard de la Woluwe, the cours Paul-Henri Spaak, the rue Voot, the Hymans-Vandervelde tunnel, the Woluwe Shopping, the place Saint-Lambert, the Roodebeek metro station and the rue de la Station de Woluwe. It has 40,500 m³ of retention basins. This is not an accident of the terrain: the moulin de Lindekemale, on the northern edge of the parc Malou, turns on the Woluwe and is mentioned as early as 1129 — it is the oldest surviving watermill in the Region. A rug stored in a cellar on those streets is a job that comes in sooner or later.

That is exactly the setting in which wool starts to smell: stagnant damp, a rolled-up rug, darkness. Washing settles the smell, the way it is stored stops it coming back.

Who lives here

4,405 officials of the European institutions live in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert (2022 figures, IBSA). The three leading foreign nationalities are French (3,516), Italian (2,215) and German (1,517), for 38% foreign residents in 2022 and 40.3% in 2025. Added to that are the École européenne Bruxelles II (rue Oscar Jespers 75) and the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc with the UCLouvain Bruxelles Woluwe campus (avenue Hippocrate 10): two hubs that feed a population of international families and doctors with a high turnover — hence rugs that move house, go into storage and are resold.

Dogs, children, entertaining, house shares: it is the way people live here that decides how often a rug is washed, not a theoretical calendar.

The building stock

Only 12% of the housing stock predates 1919: Woluwe-Saint-Lambert was built in the twentieth century, and the flat dominates there. Average household of 2.03 people, 47% single-person households (2022). What that means for a rug: few of the large formats of a town house, many living-room and bedroom rugs in standardised rooms, and narrow lift cars in the blocks of the 1960s and 1970s.

The type of floor changes everything: on an old parquet, a rug traps the mineral dust; on cold tiles, it takes up damp from underneath.

A living-room rug can give up as much as a kilo and a half of mineral dust, settled at the base of the pile, against the foundation, where no domestic vacuum cleaner will go and find it. It is not fluff: it is sand, angular grains that saw at the wool with every step.

Hence the first rule: nothing goes into water before it has been dusted. Mechanical dusting works by vibration and powerful suction, on both faces; beating does the same work by percussion. Wetting a dusty rug turns that sand into mud and fixes it at the bottom of the pile.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

I live in a ground-floor flat over a cellar near the boulevard de la Woluwe and my rug smells musty every summer. Is that normal?

It is common in this area: the boulevard de la Woluwe, the rue Voot and the surroundings of the place Saint-Lambert are on the valley floor, and the town itself lists them among its flood-risk areas. The cellars there stay cool and heavy with damp, and wool rolled up in those conditions ferments and attracts moths. We deal with the smell by a full wash and controlled drying in the workshop, and we advise never storing a rolled rug in a cellar in that neighbourhood — storing it flat, upstairs, is enough to avoid the problem.

Can I wash my rug with a hired shampooer?

It is the best way to ruin it. These machines inject hot water and an alkaline detergent without ever rinsing with clean water or spinning. On wool, that gives at best a sticky residue that calls the dust back, at worst a dye bleed and the beginnings of felting.

How do I know whether my rug needs washing?

Lift a corner and tap the back with the flat of your hand, over a light-coloured floor. If a grey cloud settles, the mineral dust has already reached the base of the pile. A second sign: colours that look veiled. That is almost never fading, it is a grey film sitting on the pile.
