What the ground changes
Rug restoration in Rixensart
We repair from the structure towards the surface: warp and weft, then pile, then colour.
Who lives here
Average income per resident: €25,335 (2021 assessment year), third in Walloon Brabant. The town is home to officials of international institutions and to managers of Brussels companies. Median price of a house in 2024: €395,000.
It is households like these that keep a rug for thirty years and bring it to us when the weft starts to speak.
Collection
The GSK campus at Rixensart covers 32 hectares crossed by the Lasne, employs around 2,000 people and has been running since 1958. Together with Wavre (8 km away) and Gembloux, GSK's vaccine hub accounts for 9,000 employees, the largest private employer in the south of the country.
We take the rug away to the workshop: restoration is not done in your home. Access therefore governs the date, not the quote.
The building stock
53% of Rixensart's building stock consists of detached houses (2023 data) — the highest proportion recorded by the Maison de l'urbanisme du Brabant wallon, while the town is at the same time one of the densest in the province (1,315 inhabitants/km²).
The building stock dictates the wear: a rug laid in the corridor of a Brussels house does not wear like one in the living room of a villa. The selvedges go first where people walk.
A hand-knotted rug rests on three things. The warp: the threads held taut lengthwise, from one end of the loom to the other. The weft: the threads passed across after each row of knots. Together they form the foundation. The pile — what the hand touches — is only the visible part of the knots tied onto that foundation.
The order of the repairs follows from this architecture. Re-knotting pile over a broken weft is like laying tiles on a floor that moves: the area will open up again. So we rebuild the warp and the weft first, we re-knot the pile next, and we touch the colour only last, once the relief has come back up to height.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Does the rug have to be washed before it is restored?
Almost always. The mineral dust shut in at the base of the pile cuts the fibres with every step and throws off the colour matching. Hand washing therefore comes before restoration — except where an area is at risk of tearing when handled: that one is made safe first.
How do I obtain a valuation?
From photographs, to be sent by e-mail or by message: the whole rug laid flat, the back, and a close-up of each damaged area with a coin or a tape measure for scale. We reply with a costing within 48 working hours.
I have to clear a villa in the lac de Genval district after a death: what should I do with the rugs?
Many of the houses in the district around the lake date from the Belle Époque — the lake was filled in 1903-1904 — and often contain oriental rugs bought between 1900 and 1950, sometimes rolled up for decades. We come out on site for a free valuation, including for pieces that are dusty, faded or attacked by moths: condition does not rule out value. We buy for cash and take the rugs away the same day, which saves you storing them while the estate is being settled.
