Rug restoration in Zaventem

We collect the rugs to be restored in Zaventem (1930) and bring them back once the work is done. Fringes, selvedges, holes, faded colours, destroyed weft: the diagnosis is free, including when it concludes that nothing should be done.

What the ground changes

Rug restoration in Zaventem

We repair from the structure outwards: warp and weft, then pile, then colour.

The airport and employment

Brussels Airport lies on Zaventem's territory: 24,383,115 passengers in 2025, around 29,835 people employed directly on the site at the end of 2022 spread across 335 companies, and 84,732 direct and indirect jobs in total according to the study published in September 2024.

Those are the households that keep a rug for thirty years and bring it to us when the weft begins to speak.

Collection

13 km and about 20 min from the Grand-Place via the E40 and the Ring. The "Herinrichting Ring Noord" works are rebuilding the R0 from the E40 at Grand-Bigard to the E40 at Woluwe-Saint-Étienne, in four zones; the permits for the Zaventem-Machelen-Kraainem section have been lodged and the contractor was due to be appointed at the end of 2026. Sint-Stevens-Woluwe (1932) is hemmed in on the eastern Ring side, and the redevelopment of the Woluwelaan is the subject of a separate project.

We take the rug away to the workshop: restoration is not done in your home. Access therefore governs the date, not the quote.

Living with the windows shut

The night flight paths over the periphery have for years set the Flemish government against the Brussels Region; the restriction on night cargo flights on grounds of noise for local residents led DHL Aviation to move its hub to Leipzig/Halle, with a fall in freight in 2008-2009.

Damp is the leading cause of heavy restoration: it attacks the back, makes the backing adhesives give way and prepares the ground for moths.

A hand-knotted rug rests on three things. The warp: the threads held taut lengthwise, from one end of the loom to the other. The weft: the threads passed across after each row of knots. Together they form the foundation. The pile — what the hand touches — is only the visible part of the knots tied onto that foundation.

The order of the repairs follows from this architecture. Re-knotting pile over a broken weft is like laying tiles on a floor that moves: the area will open up again. So we rebuild the warp and the weft first, we re-knot the pile next, and we touch the colour only last, once the relief has come back up to height.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the rug have to be washed before it is restored?

Almost always. The mineral dust shut in at the base of the pile cuts the fibres with every step and throws off the colour matching. Hand washing therefore comes before restoration — except where an area is at risk of tearing when handled: that one is made safe first.

How do I obtain a valuation?

From photographs, to be sent by e-mail or by message: the whole rug laid flat, the back, and a close-up of each damaged area with a coin or a tape measure for scale. We reply with a costing within 48 working hours.

I am leaving Belgium at the end of my contract: can you buy my rugs before the move?

Yes, and it is in fact the most common case in Zaventem, where nearly one resident in four is of foreign nationality and where NATO and corporate families rotate every two to four years. We come out for a free valuation at your home, in Zaventem, Nossegem, Sterrebeek or Sint-Stevens-Woluwe, and we pay cash on collection. Plan the valuation at least two weeks before the removal firm's date, not the day before.
