Fitted carpets in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre
A fitted carpet is washed in place, by machine: exactly what a hand-knotted rug cannot take.
Collection
Woluwe-Saint-Pierre works mainly as a blue zone: 2 hours maximum with the parking disc, from 9.00 to 18.00 Monday to Saturday (Monday to Friday in some streets), with green and orange zones on the shopping cores. The constraint is therefore not the price but the clock — and, in villas with a long private drive, the distance between the drawing-room door and the place where the vehicle can actually park.
We work at night or at the weekend so as not to interrupt business — and access for the equipment is arranged in advance.
The building stock
Semi-detached and detached houses are three times better represented there than the regional average, density is only 4,720 inhabitants/km² (2022) — one of the lowest in the Brussels Region — and 67% of the territory is covered by vegetation. The bourgeois building stock was fixed by the laying out of the avenue de Tervueren between 1880 and 1910, on which the Palais Stoclet (no. 279, Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte) has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2009. In concrete terms: large villa drawing rooms, and so rugs of 3 × 4 m and larger, to be taken out through French windows rather than through stairwells.
On a bonded fitted carpet or on tiles, the technique is not the same as on a knotted rug: here, hot water extraction is the right move.
Diplomatic residences
Many embassies are established around the square Maréchal Montgomery and along the avenue de Tervueren. Diplomatic residences change occupants at the rhythm of postings: it is a steady flow of oriental rugs that arrive, leave again, or stay where they are at the end of a posting.
Offices, consulting rooms, waiting rooms: that kind of local economy calls for periodic maintenance rather than catch-up cleaning.
A fitted carpet is a fixed covering: stretched over underlay, fully bonded, or laid as tiles. It cannot be rolled, immersed or spun. Washing therefore takes place on site, and the only way to get clean water into it and straight back out again is hot water extraction: the nozzle sprays the solution into the pile and takes it back up a few centimetres away, in the same movement.
On a hand-knotted oriental rug, that same movement would be a mistake. The foundation is cotton, the dyes are often vegetable, and water driven in under pressure goes down into the weft with no way of getting back out: the colours migrate, the foundation swells, and the rug buckles as it dries. A hand-knotted rug is washed by immersion in a bath, spun in a centrifuge and dried flat. A fitted carpet, never — its pile is short, its back all but watertight, and the water stays where it does its work.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How long does a fitted carpet stay damp after washing?
That depends on the technique and the ventilation, not on the area. Encapsulation uses very little water and returns a surface to use quickly; hot water extraction takes longer. We choose the technique to suit your window, and we blow air across it until the end.
Can cleaning damage a fitted carpet?
Yes, in three ways: too much water reaching the substrate and lifting it, too alkaline a pH dulling a wool fibre, too aggressive a rotary brush opening up the pile. That is why we identify the fibre and the type of fitting before bringing out a machine.
We are leaving Brussels at the end of our posting. Do you call at the residences on the square Montgomery and the avenue de Tervueren to buy rugs?
Yes, and it is in fact a significant part of our work in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, where the embassies and diplomatic residences are concentrated around the square Maréchal Montgomery and the avenue de Tervueren. We travel free of charge, value on the spot and pay cash, including for the large villa formats that we roll and collect ourselves the same day. Allow us about ten days before the move: that is the comfortable margin for sorting what goes with you from what sells here.
