What the ground changes
Rug cleaning in Uccle
We dust before wetting, wash below 30 °C between pH 5 and 7, and dry flat within 24 hours.
Damp and water
The valley of the Geleytsbeek crosses the town — chaussée de Saint-Job, plaine du Bourdon, Keyenbempt. On 21 August 2021 the stream reached a flow of 13.3 m³/s there, about a hundred times its average flow, and flooded homes on the chaussée de Saint-Job. The cellars and ground floors of this valley floor are exactly the setting in which old wool is lost for want of a quick response.
That is exactly the setting in which wool starts to smell: stagnant damp, a rolled-up rug, darkness. Washing settles the smell, the way it is stored stops it coming back.
Collection
Since 1 May 2023 Uccle has applied revised rules: the former red zones have been converted into orange zones, judged better suited to an outer-belt municipality, and around half of the parking spaces in Uccle remain unregulated. It is the most comfortable municipality in the Brussels Region for a collection — but also the most stretched out: 22.9 km², or 14% of the regional territory, the second largest area in the Region after the City of Brussels, with close to a fifth of the accessible green space in Brussels.
We collect and we bring back: the washing is done flat at the workshop, never with a hose in your living room.
The building stock
The building stock of Uccle is mostly twentieth-century: only 8% predates 1919, 40% dates from between the wars and close to 50% from after 1945. Semi-detached and detached houses are over-represented there. This is the realm of the 1920s and 1930s herringbone parquet and of the large reception rooms that call for rugs of some size.
The type of floor changes everything: on an old parquet, a rug traps mineral dust; on cold tiles, it takes up damp from underneath.
A living-room rug can give up as much as a kilo and a half of mineral dust, settled at the base of the pile, against the foundation, where no domestic vacuum cleaner will go and find it. It is not fluff: it is sand, angular grains that saw at the wool with every step.
Hence the first rule: nothing goes into water before it has been dusted. Mechanical dusting works by vibration and powerful suction, on both faces; beating does the same work by percussion. Wetting a dusty rug turns that sand into mud and fixes it at the bottom of the pile.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
I have inherited a house in Uccle with several old rugs: is it better to go through a saleroom or to sell directly?
Uccle has the particularity of housing the Hôtel de Ventes Vanderkindere, chaussée d'Alsemberg, which makes the question very concrete here. A public sale can push a rare piece higher, but it means a wait of several weeks, a commission and no guarantee of the final price. Selling directly gives you a valuation on the spot and cash payment the same day, including for the entire contents of a house. We travel free of charge throughout the town to value, and we tell you frankly when a piece is better off in the saleroom.
Can I wash my rug with a hired shampooer?
It is the best way to ruin it. These machines inject hot water and an alkaline detergent without ever rinsing with clean water or spinning. On wool, that gives at best a sticky residue that calls the dust back, at worst a dye bleed and the beginnings of felting.
How do I know whether my rug needs washing?
Lift a corner and tap the back with the flat of your hand, over a light-coloured floor. If a grey cloud settles, the mineral dust has already reached the base of the pile. A second sign: colours that look veiled. That is almost never fading, it is a grey film sitting on the pile.
