Rug restoration in Rhode-Saint-Genèse
We collect the rugs to be restored in Rhode-Saint-Genèse (1640) and bring them back once the work is done. Fringes, selvedges, holes, faded colours, destroyed weft: the diagnosis is free, including when it concludes that nothing should be done.

What the ground changes
Rug restoration in Rhode-Saint-Genèse
We repair from the structure outwards: warp and weft, then pile, then colour.
The rug market
The median price of a house in Rhode-Saint-Genèse is above €567,000, and the villas in the most closed-off districts go beyond €2 million. These very large plots, behind high walls and gates, are largely passed on within a closed circuit among well-off families. Average price per m²: €3,325, ahead of Waterloo (€3,043) and Braine-l'Alleud (€2,604).
A piece that has value deserves to be restored before it is sold — but not in any old way: a clumsy restoration loses more than it brings in.
The local setting
Part of the municipal territory is taken up by the forêt de Soignes. La Petite-Espinette, on the Uccle boundary on the chaussée de Waterloo, sits deep in the forest: the terminus of a tram line electrified as early as 1894 to bring city dwellers to the edge of the woods, it is today a well-known shopping district and a bus stop linking Brussels to Waterloo and Braine-l'Alleud.
That context explains a good part of what we see arriving at the workshop from this town.
Collection
Only 14 km by road from the centre of Brussels: it is one of the closest towns to our workshop. It is served by the chaussée de Waterloo (N5) and has a railway station.
We take the rug away to the workshop: restoration is not done in your home. Access therefore governs the date, not the quote.
A hand-knotted rug rests on three things. The warp: the threads held taut lengthwise, from one end of the loom to the other. The weft: the threads passed across after each row of knots. Together they form the foundation. The pile — what the hand touches — is only the visible part of the knots tied onto that foundation.
The order of the repairs follows from this architecture. Re-knotting pile over a broken weft is like laying tiles on a floor that moves: the area will open up again. So we rebuild the warp and the weft first, we re-knot the pile next, and we touch the colour only last, once the relief has come back up to height.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Does the rug have to be washed before it is restored?
Almost always. The mineral dust shut in at the base of the pile cuts the fibres with every step and throws off the colour matching. Hand washing therefore comes before restoration — except where an area is at risk of tearing when handled: that one is made safe first.
How do I obtain a valuation?
From photographs, to be sent by e-mail or by message: the whole rug laid flat, the back, and a close-up of each damaged area with a coin or a tape measure for scale. We reply with a costing within 48 working hours.
Rhode-Saint-Genèse is in Flanders: can I be served in French?
Yes. Rhode-Saint-Genèse (Sint-Genesius-Rode) is a Flemish municipality with language facilities, where about 64% of the residents are French-speaking. We work equally in French, in Dutch or in English, and both the quote and the invoice can be drawn up in the language of your choice. For the collection, we come into properties with a gate and a private drive: you only need to tell us the code or which bell to ring.
