The rug market
The Vrijdagmarkt square was laid out in 1547 by the town planner Gilbert van Schoonbeke, who cut through the Bergstraat, Leeuwenstraat, Valkstraat and Heilig Geeststraat to do so. As early as 1549 the market for old clothes and furniture was moved there from the Grote Markt; the name "Vrijdachsmerct" appears from 1585 onwards. To this day, complete house contents from bankruptcies, estates and seizures are sold there at public auction.
A rug bought second-hand rarely arrives clean: mechanical dusting draws out of it what no domestic vacuum cleaner will go and find.
Collection
Antwerp has had a low-emission zone since 1 February 2017. It covers the city inside the R1 ring road plus the Linkeroever; the R1 itself, the port and a few access roads are excluded. The tightening planned for 1 January 2026 has been dropped: Euro 5 diesel and Euro 2 petrol remain admitted in 2026. Foreign plates must be registered beforehand (or on the day itself, within 24 hours); fines run from €150 to €350. Since 1 August 2023, on-street parking in the historic core has been reserved for residents and permit holders: loading and unloading remains free, a "parkeervergunning voor ondernemingen" can be obtained online, and the maximum height of covered car parks has to be checked before taking a van in.

Who lives here
The Jewish community of Antwerp numbers roughly 20,000 to 25,000 members, of whom around 20,000 are Haredim and around 10,000 Hasidim (2018 figures). It is traditionally concentrated in the district south of the central station, known locally as "Joods Antwerpen". Three large synagogues there are known by their addresses: Van Den Nestlei, Bouwmeesterstraat and Oostenstraat. Yiddish, French, Hebrew, English and German are all commonly spoken.
Dogs, children, entertaining, house shares: it is the way people live here that sets how often a rug is washed, not a theoretical calendar.
A living-room rug can give up as much as a kilo and a half of mineral dust, settled at the base of the pile, against the foundation, where no domestic vacuum cleaner will go and find it. It is not fluff: it is sand, angular grains that saw at the wool with every step.
Hence the first rule: nothing goes into water before it has been dusted. Mechanical dusting works by vibration and powerful suction, on both faces; beating does the same work by percussion. Wetting a dusty rug turns that sand into mud and fixes it at the bottom of the pile.

You come up to Antwerp with a van: does the low-emission zone cause a problem for the collection?
No. Antwerp has been an LEZ since 1 February 2017 for the whole city inside the R1 ring road and the Linkeroever, but our van meets the access standards — and the tightening that was to come into force on 1 January 2026 has been dropped. The real point to watch lies elsewhere: since 1 August 2023, you can no longer park on the street in the historic core without a permit. So we set the collection on a loading and unloading window agreed in advance, which means you need to tell us the floor and whether or not there is a lift.
Can I wash my rug with a hired shampooer?
It is the best way to ruin it. These machines inject hot water and an alkaline detergent without ever rinsing with clean water or spinning. On wool, that gives at best a sticky residue that calls the dust back, at worst a dye bleed and the beginnings of felting.
How do I know whether my rug needs washing?
Lift a corner and tap the back with the flat of your hand, over a light-coloured floor. If a grey cloud settles, the mineral dust has already reached the base of the pile. A second sign: colours that look veiled. That is almost never fading, it is a grey film sitting on the pile.
